The letter was quite impressive. Strong open followed by a strong message. I wonder how many former customers will actually re-subscribe to the service in January when the promotion ends. In any case, this has me thinking about what we can do on our end to encourage clients to keep using our services.

Wow, that really was a smart letter for him to have sent out. Not only does it achieve the things you mentioned but it also enhances the opinion recipients of this letter have of him and of the services his site provides. So anyone who recognizes the smartness of this strategy, or anyone who appreciates the free gift, now holds him in higher regard and will feel better about possibly renewing their subscription. I recently experienced another smart marketing strategy, where the company started offering a new service and offered existing customers a reduced price on the new service. I didn't sign up and later received another email along the lines of "We can't believe you didn't take us up on this great offer, but we're really serious about you trying this so here's an even lower price." When I still didn't sign up, I got another email later offering me an even lower price. I didn't think they'd go any lower so I signed up for it then. This way, the company is able to target customers who place different value on the service being offered, and each customer ends up paying what he's willing to pay based on how much he values the service. -Mike
